Mission
The mission of Elk Rock Garden is rooted in heritage, growing community, seeding a sustainable future.
Programs or services
Elk Rock Garden remains one of the oldest and largest private gardens in Oregon, with breathtaking views of the Willamette River and Mt. Hood. Established in 1909 by Scottish immigrant and entrepreneur Peter Kerr, and design influenced by John Charles Olmsted, the garden offers a unique arrangement of generations-old plantings native to the Pacific Northwest, featuring mature specimens that cannot be easily replicated in our lifetime.

Since 1994, the Elk Rock Garden Foundation has committed to protect, preserve, and perpetuate the estate as a free, unique 9.5-acre green space to benefit the Greater Portland community and visitors worldwide. Our objective is to conserve, restore, and enhance the Elk Rock Garden property to serve as a nationally recognized historic garden and center for learning. More than an estate garden, Elk Rock Garden is a living laboratory and cultivation hub where mission-aligned nonprofit organizations and gardening enthusiasts of all backgrounds can meet and collaborate on nature-based solutions that improve the health and beauty of urban cities in an ever-changing climate.
Target Audience
Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to visit the garden. Elk Rock Garden offers walking paths that wind through curated garden beds as well as wild woods. Visitors from nearby areas and distant countries visit Elk Rock Garden to marvel at the biodiversity, relax in the shade, play with their kids in the lawn, and enjoy the 117-year historic grounds.
