Request a Grant Writer

Fellowships to USA and International scholars, artists, and arts professionals to undertake study, research, and exploration trips. Funding is intended to allow individuals from Hong Kong SAR, Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Macau SAR, to travel to the United States, and for US applicants to travel to these countries. Dissertation research is also supported in this category with partial funding offered for up to one year.

Since its inception in 1963 as the Asian Cultural Program of the JDR 3rd Fund, ACC has operated a program of long-term, immersive fellowships and shorter-term grants for individual artists, scholars, and arts professionals who wish to pursue specialized training not available in their home countries; find new creative inspiration through travel, research, and exploration; or pursue targeted research projects aligned with ACC's mission of advancing international understanding.

In addition to funding, ACC offers Fellows logistical and programmatic support. The level of support will vary according to the needs of a given proposal and ACC’s resources in the destination country. Support may include recommendations of sites to visit or activities to participate in, and personal introductions to relevant contacts within ACC’s network of alumni and partners throughout Asia and the U.S. This network is particularly strong where ACC has offices: Hong Kong, Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan, and the U.S.

Programmatic support is intended to enhance a proposed plan of activity and deepen the cultural exchange experience, but proposals should be feasible with or without additional guidance from ACC.

Term of Contract:

Trips ranging from one to six months. The funding period begins on June 1st of the year after the submission deadline. Grant-funded travel must begin within 12 months of that date. At ACC's discretion, New York Fellowship Program participants may be offered a start date outside this funding period.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants from China, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Macau SAR, the Philippines, Taiwan, and the United States may apply.

ACC Individual applicants must be either residents or citizens of one of the following countries/regions: Afghanistan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Japan, Philippines, Bhutan, Korea, Singapore, Brunei Laos, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Macau SAR, Taiwan, China, Malaysia, Thailand, East Timor, Mongolia, Vietnam, Hong Kong SAR, Myanmar, United States, India, and Nepa.

Pre-Application Information:

ACC holds one open application cycle per year.

Timeline:
- September 16, 2019: Application opens for individual applicants
- November 7, 2019, by 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time: Deadline for applications from individuals
- November 21, 2019: Deadline for letters of recommendation
- December 2019 - April 2020: Application review period
- May 2020: Award decisions made by ACC's Board of Trustees
- June 2020: Award notification
- June 1, 2020 - May 31, 2021: Fellowship and grant-related travel must begin in this period

Collaborative fellowships are intended to support two collaborators traveling together at the same time, not separate trips by each individual. Collaborators must apply together using a single individual application form. Application answers and supporting materials should represent both individuals equally and make a case for why the project requires collaboration. The average grant amount is not likely to be larger than an individual grant, so successful applications tend to be those proposing a shorter period of travel.

Dissertation Research: An ACC fellowship will not be sufficient to cover a full year of field research, especially in more expensive destination countries. The submitted budget should indicate additional prospective funding sources.
