Add to My Calendar

American Philosophical Society (APS)

Deadline Date:

03/10/20

Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $3,500 to USA and Canada postdoctoral scholars and graduate students to conduct research on Native American ethnohistory, history of studies, and linguistics in the continental US and Canada. Applicants are advised to initiate applications in advance of the deadline to allow time for the submission of letters of support.

The grants are intended for such costs as travel, tapes, films, and consultants' fees. The committee distinguishes ethnohistory from contemporary ethnography as the study of cultures and cultural change through time.

Recipients of awards are expected to provide the American Philosophical Society Library with a brief formal report and copies of any field notes, films, audio recordings, transcriptions, etc., produced or acquired in the process of the grant-funded research. The materials will be made available to scholars using the Library’s collections.

The committee sometimes approves two awards to the same person within a five-year period.

Work in Mexico and South America is not covered by the Phillips Fund.
