Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Grants to USA, Canada, and International researchers at nonprofit organizations and institutions for research related to glaucoma prevention and treatment. Funding is intended to support pioneering studies, with a preference for pilot projects that may not be currently competitive for industry or government funding.

Please note that applicants to the NGR program are encouraged to apply for funding to create tools that would benefit all investigators in the field, including animal models of disease, or cell lines. While prior awardees are welcome to submit new proposals following the conclusion of the previously-sponsored project, the new proposals should not be extensions of the prior project. Additionally, Postdoctoral Fellows may be listed as Co-Principal Investigator.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Amount: $100,000 per year

Term of Contract:

Duration: 2 years maximum (total value $200,000)

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

BrightFocus will fund grants for research at non-profit organizations or institutions only. Each Grantee Institution must submit evidence of its tax-exempt status to BrightFocus prior to the distribution of any Grant including but not limited to, a tax determination from the Internal Revenue Service.

For foreign institutions: Each Grantee Institution must submit evidence of its tax-exempt status to BrightFocus prior to the distribution of any Grant, including but not limited to, a determination of tax-exempt or nonprofit status from their home country of origin.

Traditionally, in order to be eligible for grant funding from the BrightFocus’ National Glaucoma Research (NGR) Standard Award Program, the Principal Investigator (P.I.) must have held an academic rank equivalent or higher than Assistant Professor.

In recent years, many outstanding junior faculty have taken non-tenure track positions that in earlier years might have been developed as tenure-track positions. Though BrightFocus continues to encourage innovative proposals from all career stages, BrightFocus’ guidelines have evolved with the field to extend eligibility to non-tenure-track applicants as well. Non-tenure-track positions are welcome to apply for funding if they are appropriately trained to lead an independent research study, and are permitted by their organizations to manage the grant and supervise any key personnel.

All Grants must be used exclusively for research and research equipment not for overhead, capital expenditures, administrative costs or other peripheral costs, except where BrightFocus, in its discretion, may make an exception for costs associated with the publication of the results of the BrightFocus sponsored research in academic journals, or for costs associated with participation in academic conferences.

For details about ineligible applicants, see the FAQS page.
